From Advertising Operations Manager to Junior Web Developer in nine weeks

Ever wonder if being a young parent and a career changer can go hand in hand? Meet Inge, Junior Web Developer, #batch269 alumna and a proud mum of a 2-year-old. Inge worked as an Advertising Operations Manager for a Norwegian news channel TV2 for four years before joining Le Wagon Web Development Course in Oslo, in June 2019.
Summary
Inge started her career as a technical newbie, but along the way became very interested in technical know-how. Her passion for tech led to some self-teaching, but she knew she needed to deepen and consolidate her knowledge. That’s when she decided to join a programming course and enrolled in Le Wagon coding school. Luckily, her employer was on board with the project and supported her plans. After nine weeks of intensive work, she came back to TV2, and with her freshly-acquired coding skills, she made her way to the new position: Junior Web Developer.
How did your adventure with programming start?
I have been interested in coding for some years now. Knowing some of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is important for my job but I had very little experience with it. I had taken some Codeacademy courses before and I really liked it, so a year ago I decided I’d learn how to code for real, luckily with the support of my work. I started with online courses but found that to be a little lonely and that didn’t really push me to build something on my own. Then I thought about participating in a coding course.
Why did you decide to join Le Wagon?
I had heard a lot about coding bootcamps and how effective they were, but I have a daughter that’s 2 years old and I wasn’t willing to travel to another country for nine weeks or more. So I started googling for coding courses again in February this year and saw that Le Wagon would start its first web development course in Oslo that summer. Then there was little doubt that I wanted to join!
What did you like the most about the course?
Both the daily exercises and the final project weeks. I was surprised at how quickly we got better, every day, thanks to the many challenging exercises every day. The final two project weeks really pulled me out of my comfort zone, and I feel like a learned so much on how to tie everything together in those last two weeks!
You decided to upskill and change your position within the company. How did it go?
I am very lucky that my work supported me throughout the bootcamp. We had been talking about hiring a developer for our team for a while so when I suggested that I wanted to learn how to code they agreed that this would be a perfect fit for both. So I returned to work to a new position as a Junior Web Developer!
What would you point as the most important takeaway from the coding bootcamp?
It has definitely opened my mind a lot more for the coding world and confirmed that I want to be a part of that world. Also that it’s never too late to learn! That has given me a lot of confidence and motivation to continue learning.
Le wagon also thinks it’s important to know how to work with other people so they stress that every single day. And since everyone that is part of the bootcamp comes from different parts of the world, with different backgrounds, it makes it really interesting to be able to work and learn together.
Would you recommend Le Wagon to others willing to dive into coding?
Absolutely! Le Wagon Web Development Course is the perfect way to learn new tech skills for those who don’t want or don’t have the time to study for 2 or more years at school. They balance the curriculum very well so that you have all the needed basics when you’ve finished the course and you can continue learning at a much higher level. It is extremely intense, but nine weeks fly by faster than you know, and it’s so worth it. I had high expectations before the bootcamp started and Le Wagon didn’t disappoint!
