Michaël’s journey, from graphic design to a new career as back-end developer

Michaël discovered Web Development while working as an e-shop manager. He then decided to learn more about it and make a life-changing move by joining Le Wagon bootcamp. He is now evolving as a back-end developer, enjoying his newfound career.
Summary
I'm Michaël, 27 and I’m a marketing graduate, passionate about everything related to tech.
After my studies, I worked at a toy store company, where I was in charge of graphic design and managing the e-shop.

As I was taking care of the website, I got curious about Web Development as I wanted to learn how to customize it. I started to read some tutorials, then tried making my own just for fun. I later started a small project with my brother, who has been a web developer for many years.

After learning on my own for a few months during my free time, I realized that I wanted to commit myself to learn Web Development on a full-time basis. This is why I started looking for training and bootcamps.

My goal, when I applied to le Wagon bootcamp, was to learn a lot about current technologies and the good practices when it comes to coding, as when learning on your own, it can be hard to find up-to-date resources to help you.

I wanted to be able to build applications on my own by the end of the bootcamp, and also meet other people who are also passionate about coding.

What did you enjoy the most during the bootcamp?

I loved the way the classes were organized. Learning in the morning, discovering new features we could achieve, and then applying everything we learned during the rest of the day through challenges.

The buddy system was also really good. When having an issue, debugging it together and discussing different approaches to resolve it made us learn a lot. And in case we couldn’t find a way to solve our problems, the teachers were always available to help us and explain why we were having such problems.
Project Week was also very enjoyable. To build a project on your own is very exciting and it was a pleasure to show the result of our hard work to the teachers!

I really loved my experience at le Wagon, I met a lot of great people and I’m still working on a side project with a couple of them.
The expectations that I had about the bootcamp were fully met. I learned so much about ways to code faster and more efficiently.

Since graduating, what are you up to?

I quickly found a job after the bootcamp at Recovr as a back-end developer.
I've been working for a few months now. We are using Ruby on Rails, which is great as I was able to directly apply everything learned at Le Wagon.

Before the bootcamp, my goal was actually to work as a front-end developer, as it was what I loved the most. But discovering Ruby made me enjoy the back-end a lot more and I’m happy I found a position with this language.

Did you face any difficulty applying for jobs after the bootcamp?

I had the chance to know a previous alumnus from Le Wagon that recently started his own company. So I didn’t have to look and apply to a lot of companies before starting to work.
Of course, I had to pass a technical interview, but everything I learned at Le Wagon (including the fact that we are being taught how to learn fast because I had to know new topics that weren’t covered during the bootcamp for this interview!) allowed me to go through it and get my first job as a developer.

Are you happy you decided to make a life-changing move and changed your career?

I could not be happier that I made the decision to quit my job and enroll at Le Wagon. Of course, it was a bit scary, I had a secured position in my previous job and no obvious reason to quit apart from my will to learn web development.
It opened the doors of a new world to me, with constant new tech to learn about, I’m really excited about the coming years.

What is your advice for anyone thinking of starting a new journey with Le Wagon?

This bootcamp is a life-changing experience, you’re not only learning a lot of new skills but also joining a great community. If you are considering learning web development, Le Wagon is one of the best choices you can make to give your career a boost!
Whether you’re completely new to coding, or already a bit familiar with it, Le Wagon is right for you if you want to improve your coding skills.
